22 Years of Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja

17/4/2015

Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja was one of the most anticipated films in the 1980s because it had the team of Mr. India again. The film was launched at the Silver Jubilee success party of Mr. India in 1988. This was the second film with the same title. The first was starring Dev Anand & Waheeda Rehman.
Picture
Initially Shekhar Kapur agreed to direct the film but he then decided to leave the project. Satish Kaushik who was the assistant director of Mr. India stepped in and made his debut as a director with this film. The film started shooting in 1988. Some scenes and songs were shot. The movie was delayed so many times due to so many reasons. be it stars dates, reshooting some outdated scenes. lavish sets building etc. Even the opening credits of the film was very costly! It was at that time when Yash Chopra requested Boney Kapoor some of Sridevi's dates to be given in favor of his own film Chandni. Boney did not mind but again that added to the delay of the film.
Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja was at that time the costliest film ever made. Its budget has surpassed the Rs. 10 Crore & in our times that means over Rs. 100 Crore! Lots of efforts were put in lavish film sets and costumes, but unfortunately less in story building. The first half was fun to watch specially with Sridevi & Anil Kapoor competing each other in burglary, but in the second half the film started to feel rushed and lacking a solid story & dialogue.
Picture
The song Dushman Dil Ka Jo Hai Mere was shot in 1988 and it had a lavish setting. Sridevi was mind-blowing be it  her dance, her look and her expressions, they were all something you expect from The Sridevi. Neeta Lulla has done all her costumes for the film and most of them were exquisite and grand. The premiere of the film itself was extraordinary and grand. It had many big names attending be it Amitabh Bachchan, Yash Chopra, Subhash Ghai, Rekha and many other stars. Trophies were given to the cast and crew of the film. Sridevi's trophy was given by none other than Rekha.

The film was released after a long delay in 1993 & opened to full houses but unfortunately could not sustain. The cost was too huge to recover. Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja's failure was due to its cost. If the film hadn't costed that much it would have definitely fared much better commercially. A film is usually considered a hit when its revenues are higher than its cost by a good margin. Some films that year were hit even though they made less money than Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja but they had the advantage of a much lower cost.
To the people who have the film on VHS they will notice that many of the outdated scenes and even some portions of the songs were chopped when the film came in DVD. All the DVDs released for the film from different companies lack some of  the original footage. So if you have the VHS then keep it until a DVD that has the full content of the film is released which we doubt will happen.

Sridevi was the highlight of the film. Actually Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja has nothing else other than Sridevi be it her wonderful acting or superior dancing. She did the Madrasi comedy scene to perfection. The Japanese woman and so many other unforgettable avatars. The film has so many lovely moments that cannot be forgotten. At least this film to Sridevi fans will remain one of her carrier's many memorable films. Each one of us have his own reasons to like the film.

It is nice to see The Last Empress herself remembers the film today & tweets about it.

Sridevi & Jeetendra - A Super Hit Team

13/4/2015

Few days ago we have celebrated the jumping jack Jeetendra's birthday (7th of April) so this post will be about Jeetndra's super hit pairing with Sridevi. Jeetendra was a huge Sridevi fan right before she made her debut in Hindi films. He was very keen to work with her and he suggested her name to the director K. Raghvendra Rao to be his heroine in Himmatwala. Himmatwala was a remake of Jaya Prada's Telugu film Ooriki Monagadu (1981). Jaya was upset with Jeetendra for not taking her instead of Sridevi. She did not speak with him for three months because of that.

Jeetendra went on to make a very successful team with Sridevi. They acted in 16 films together of which 13 were hits. Sridevi was the last heroine that Jeetendra made a very successful team with. After her there was no heroine that he could have made a successful pair with, even though he acted with Meenkashi Sheshadri, Madhuri Dixit, Bhanupriya, Kimi Katkar & others in more than one movie but none of them made a successful pairing with him. The south remakes specially those with Sridevi have extended Jeentendra's film career by more than a decade.
Picture
The most successful heroines pairings with Jeetendra besides Sridevi are Jaya Prada, Hema Malini, Rekha and Reena Roy. He gave several hits with each one of them. But what makes his pairing with Sridevi stands out the most than the rest are several things. In one of his interviews when he was asked about his heroines Jeetendra said that audience and his fans have always complimented him and liked his pairing with Sridevi more. He said that he has been told many times that they look really good together on screen.

Another thing to note is that Jeetendra worked in less films with Sridevi than the rest yet the success ratio of his films with Sridevi were higher than other heroines. Jaya Prada comes as a second, Hema Malini comes in third place while Rekha and Reena Roy come in the fourth and fifth places. The below picture shows the number of films Jeetendra worked with each of his hit pairing heroines and the success ratio of the pairing depending on the number of hits given.

We hope Jeetendra had a very happy birthday and we thank him for his contribution to the Indian cinema.
Happy Birthday Jeetuji!

Some dreams come true! To many Sridevi fans it is one of their dreams to meet The Last Empress Sridevi and experience the joy others have experienced. Our dear friend Lakshmi Moorty is one of the lucky fans. Lakshmi has been a loyal Sridevi fan for many many years. She loves Sridevi a lot. Lakshmi has met Sridevi in 1986, she visited her house and spoke to her parents & then Lakshmi got another chance of meeting Sri in her visit to Bay Area in California, USA.

Lakshmi greeted Sridevi, talked to her and expressed her love too. She had made a speech in the event where she was next to Sridevi welcoming her to the US and talking about how a big fan she is. We have to say that Sridevi looked very comfortable with Lakshmi. They both posed together holding hands! If you see the below picture you can clearly notice the comfort & happiness on their faces.

Lakshmi even recorded a video welcoming Sri, talking about her memories and how much she adores her. In the same video Lakshmi also says that she named her granddaughter after Sridevi's name.

No matter what we say we can't express the love and admiration unless you hear it directly from Lakshmi. Watch the below superb video and click HERE to read few words from Lakshmi herself & see more pictures of the event in Bay Area. The whole thing has been added to the fans corner section.

Lakshmi ji we are very proud of you. Well Done! and thank you for sharing your wonderful experience with us.

Sridevi at the Airport

9/4/2015

Sridevi was spotted at the airport yesterday! She was in a very simple look yet very beautiful and elegant. This is not the first time that Sri was spotted at an airport. She always manages to look elegant even with the simplest outfits and no makeup look. A big part of this elegance comes from her aura. That strong star aura that Sri has. She is a queen no matter if she wears a makeup or not, have fancy dresses & Saris or be just in a simple look.
We have made a compilation of Sridevi's different  airport look. Added to the gallery under random images. click here to access more than a dozen of Sridevi airport look pictures  HERE

Heroines Can't do without Sridevi

8/4/2015

This title once was the cover story of one of the magazines 30 years ago in late 80s. The story was about how other heroines look up to Sridevi's body of work, how they admire her performances, how much they wish that they had similar roles and how every interview of other heroines was incomplete without mentioning the name Sridevi! Her name was always brought up be it by the host or the heroine who was interviewed. She was the standard of perfection. If a heroine was to be evaluated then critics, filmmakers and public too would put her up against Sridevi and evaluate the new girl!! Thats how Sridevi was and the story today is not any different!

Sri is still the one or at least the most actress that gets mentioned when heroines are asked about role model or dream role! None of her rivals or to be precise media made rivals ever get mentioned the way Sridevi does. They cannot compete in that area at all.

Few days ago DnaIndia.com had this article under the title "Celebrities pick the iconic roles they would love to play" and no surprise Sridevi's name was mentioned by two of the actresses. Here what they said:

Sushmita Sen picked: Shashi Godbole (English Vinglish)
"I bow down to Sridevi when I see films like English-Vinglish. She is one of the reasons I become an actress. I would have loved to do something like that."
Picture
Alia Bhatt Picked: Anju/Manju (ChaalBaaz), Benazir (Khuda Gawah)
"I am not sure I will be able to do it, but I would live to play Sridevi in Chaalbaaz. I saw the film recently and I was bowled over by her sheer talent. She played both diametrically opposite roles so beautifully. Another film I was very impressed with was Khuda Gawah. I did a horse riding sequence for Shandaar recently and I was so scared, even after I underwent all that training, In Khuda Gawah, she has so many horse-riding sequences and she seems so much at ease. I don't think I can do justice to any of her roles but I would like to reprise her on the big screen."

Wonderful what both of them said about Sri and her performances. Both have also been added to what others say section.

Sridevi Tattooed in our Hearts

7/4/2015

We all love Sridevi in different ways. She is in our hearts all the time. Her fans are more than die hard fans. It is very difficult for a fan to explain or express how much he loves Sridevi and what he would do to show that love. While Sridevi is definitely tattooed in our hearts there is this die hard fan, our friend Abhay Nevrekar who decided to have Sri's name tattooed on his forearm and fingers!. Abhay has been a big fan of Sridevi for many years. On last year's birthday of the diva he decided to have the tattoo as a birthday gift for Sri. Yes he has Sridevi's name tattooed in his heart but he went one further step ahead by having it really tattooed on his fingers and forearm. Abhay said that he did it so that Sri remains with him and before his eyes 24 X 7!

We really hope Sridevi reads this post and see how much her fans love her and how much they are loyal to her.
Abhay we salute you for doing this and thank you very much for sharing your pictures with us.
